Telamon NC Head Start To Partner With Lucy Daniels Center For Early Childhood To Provide Mental Health Services For 500 Children In North Carolina
August 26, 2016
Raleigh, North Carolina – August 18, 2016. Telamon Corporation’s Head Start program in North Carolina announces a partnership agreement with the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood to provide mental health assessment and consultation services for approximately 500 children within the region.
Lucy Daniels Center will consult with teachers and parents of children enrolled in Telamon NC Regional, Early, Home Based and Child Care Partner (CCP) sites on an ongoing basis in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to bring our long experience supporting and mentoring teachers and parents in childcare environments to join the effort to provide these children with a head start in life,” said Dr. Don Rosenblitt, Clinical/Executive Director at Lucy Daniels.
Established in 1965, Head Start promotes school readiness for children in low-income families by offering educational, nutritional, health, social, and other services. Since its inception, Head Start has served more than 33 million children, birth to age 5, and their families. Head Start Centers operated by Telamon will serve nearly approximately 1,800 children and families this year.
Seeing a huge need within the North Carolina population that Telamon Head Start serves, State Director LTeisha Curtis was eager to partner with a mental agency to help fill the gap and meet the large and growing need she saw within her Center’s communities, with many families in near-crisis situations.
Partnering with Lucy Daniels Center to assist children and families faced with mental health challenges and other life stressors is a way to enhance the array of services already being provided to support families enrolled in Telamon programs.
Says Curtis: “I am thrilled about this new partnership that will ultimately support the children we serve in the area of social emotional development, which is critical for school readiness and life. Equally important, our education staff and parents will benefit from rich training experiences and supports through Lucy Daniels giving them the opportunity to add new strategies to their tool boxes, in turn yielding better outcomes for our children.”
The nonprofit Lucy Daniels Center in Cary, NC specializes in helping children who are dealing with mental and emotional health challenges, behavioral issues, and other challenges. Their multi-disciplinary team works together with families to provide a uniquely comprehensive approach, delivering individualized treatment to each child. In addition to mental health assessments - to be made available to every child enrolled in Telamon Head Start programs – the Lucy Daniels Center will offer parent workshops and teacher mentoring.
Healthy childhood development – physical, emotional, and intellectual – is the basis for successful growth and achievement in adults. The US Surgeon General has estimated that one child in 5 struggles with a mental health concern. Children facing such obstacles have been found to benefit from interventions at the earliest possible stage, when they can do the most good and help children to realize their potential.
