Julisha Hill: Telamon Success Story
By Karina Amundson, Case Manager
Julisha Hill is a 21-year-old single mother of four children. At 18 years of age, Julisha was having some difficulty securing employment because she did not have a high school diploma. As a result, she went to the Department of Labor seeking assistance. It was at this time they introduced her to farmwork. This type of referral is a routine practice since the passing of HB-87. Nonetheless, in 2011, she worked at Hamilton Growers planting cucumbers, tomatoes, and bell peppers. However, she became unemployed for several months after the season ended. During this time, Julisha saw a Telamon flier at her son's Head Start Program in Moultrie, GA. She decided to stop by the Telamon office at the GA Department of Labor where she spoke with Telamon Case Manager, Karma Amundson.
Ms. Hill enrolled in the NFJP program, seeking assistance to obtain a GED. Karma referred her to Abraham Lincoln Technical College’s High School Equivalency Program. Julisha was also referred to several community partner agencies that provided her with clothing and financial assistance with paying her electricity bill while in school. At that time, Julisha was expecting a new baby and was worried yet optimistic about her future.
Julisha is a fighter and has not allowed the challenges she endured to keep her from learning and persevering through difficult times. However, at one point, she nearly quit her GED classes. She stated, "Karina encouraged me to continue going to my classes and to keep studying for my tests." Karina also provided additional support to Julisha by giving her Reading Fundamental books and making Telamon enjoyable for her children by giving them Telamon cookies, which kept them eager to return.
On April 28th, 2012, Julisha reached her first goal and earned her GED certificate. Ms. Amundson had the pleasure of attending her graduation ceremony. The GED immediately paid off. Ms. Hill received an agricultural upgrade through her employment as a Deboning Specialist of Sanderson Farms where she now earns $10.00 per hour representing a nearly $1.75 per hour increase. Julisha always expresses her gratitude to Telamon, she says, "Telamon has been a great blessing to me!" With four children, all under the age of six, Julisha has set a great example for her children and for all those seeking change in their lives.
